Certification and Ratings programmes are working with partners in Mexico to explore the supply chain of key commodities, and support in-country improvement efforts.

Regional Collaboration in Mexico

The Certification and Ratings Collaboration is working with partners in Mexico to share organizational expertise and analyses and create clear targeted messaging that will resonate in with producers and buyers of Mexican Seafood.

The working group includes staff from Marine Stewardship Council, Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Fair Trade USA, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch,  Impacto Colectivo por la Pesca y la Acuacultura Mexicanas (ICPMX) , SmartFish, WWF Mexico and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

The group is interested in exploring the supply chains of both sustainably sourced seafood, and non-sustainable seafood domestically and through export into the US market.

In order to incentivize better fishery management practices, the groups participating in the project seek to make sustainability a requirement for entry into certain markets.   Partners in Mexico have noted that intermediaries at the beginning of the supply chain report that their buyers have never asked about the sustainability of their products. In addition, although several Mexican fisheries have an avoid/red Seafood Watch rating, products from those fisheries are exported to the USA. There appears to be an opportunity to work with Impacto Collectivo to engage with the buyers of Mexican seafood in the USA and domestically, to push for better practices on the water.

The goal is NOT that these buyers stop buying Mexican products, but that they put pressure on the supply chain to improve.

To inform this work, we have commissioned an analysis of the shrimp supply chain, and are working with the Mexican Shrimp Council to explore how we can support their sustainability goals.

The Collaboration welcomes feedback on the report.  Please email your feedback via the Contact Us page.
