Environmental Performance

Improving the sustainability of global seafood production requires a more accurate and deeper understanding of current environmental performance, progress to date, and priority areas for improvement. The environmental performance component of the Sustainable Seafood Data Tool consolidates data from seven global certification and ratings programs to provide NGOs, businesses, and governments a more comprehensive overview of seafood sustainability.

The latest version of the environmental performance component was launched in fall 2024. It shows that since 2020, when the Collaboration released its first data tool, the reach of certification and rating programs contributing data to the tool has grown from 39% to 51% of global seafood production. Other notable changes since 2020 include:

  • An increase of 7.7 million metric tons (Mmt) in certified or rated production
  • More than 2.5 Mmt in additional fishery improvement or aquaculture improvement project production
  • A drop of more than 28.6 million in unrated production
